When you fly into Toronto at night, the awe-inspiring lights of the city are visible for miles. However, when you fly towards the city on a hot summer day, the first thing you see is a brown dome of dirty air covering the city. As you get closer, you see a semi-circle of brown and green sludge outlining our waterfront. The health of our city can be changed, but it is up to us to change it.

Stop the Smog Machine !
Lets be clear; the plans for construction of a natural gas power plant on the Portlands of Toronto are not about the betterment of Toronto; they are about making money. Burning natural gas emits high levels of nitrous oxide, which is the base component of smog. Some people want to turn Toronto into a long-term high-paying fuel user, despite the environmental costs. Instead, we should be building clean and healthy windmills. Click the title to read some interesting details.

Swim at the Beach
Today, most pollution in the waters in front of Toronto is caused during storm runoff. Everything on the street that gets washed away ends up in the lake. As the sewers overflow, our water is poisoned. In July 2006, there were only two days in which all beaches were open. In addition, the proposed natural gas power plant would dump a load of chlorine into the lake, with unknown results. There is a plan in place, a progressive approach to the salvation of the water, prepared by the Toronto City Council in 2003.
Environment Canada: Toronto Water Remedial Action Plan
All I know is that I don't want to wait 25 years to swim at the beach. Let's figure out how to do this faster.

Reduction of Traffic and Exhaust Emissions
We all realize that cars are a problem. The air pollution in Toronto is primarily caused by vehicle exhaust fumes. The entire world faces the same issue. In addition, oil is a diminishing resource, while worldwide demand increases. While pollution levels increase, oil prices continue to rise, and travel becomes less affordable.
We must begin to develop new ways to move people around. We must also begin to change our habits, and travel more ecologically. None of this will happen easily, yet the attainment of this goal could be both achievable and rewarding.
