MY OPINION ON THE
GARDINER EXPRESSWAY

Recently, the Toronto Sun expressed concern about 'left-wing, car-hating politicians'.
Not being highly political, I am not really sure what left-wing means, unless you are talking about hockey. As for car-hating, I have been driving since the day I turned 16.

What I do realize is the need for our city and our planet to change ways. Cars are responsible for most of the smog in Toronto. Every day thousands of people sit alone in their cars, idling and polluting as they inch towards the city. There must be a better way.

Over the next four years, the city needs to develop a vision. Until we know where we want to go in the development of our city, there is no point doing things piecemeal. In standard medical practices, efforts are put into identifying and fixing specific issues. In holistic healing practice, it is necessary to consider the health and balance of a whole person. To take a holistic approach to the city, we must consider all aspects, create a vision, and then start working towards it.

My direct answer on the Gardiner Expressway is LEAVE IT ALONE. Yes, we should go ahead with the Front Street extension, but there is no real need to tear down the Gardiner Expressway. There are many other areas within the city's infrastructure that require effort and have a higher priority. We have recently experienced sinkholes and road collapses as ancient sewage pipes finally caved in. We should be putting resources into maintaining the foundation of this city rather than tearing down something that is working.

In addition, we are not ready to tear down the Gardiner. We first need to develop better and higher-capacity transit systems along the lakeshore, and also provide for the redirection of traffic.
Otherwise, we will discover that fixing problems one at a time only leads to more problems.
